Programme Note

A pianist of extraordinary stature, the Australian-British musician has altered forever our perceptions of the music of Liszt – all of whose piano works he has, with exceptional commitment, recorded; but in addition to his own compositions his pianistic interests cover much wider territory. The major work in this Russian programme is the Fourth Sonata (1877) by the neglected Anton Rubinstein (1829-94), whose works he has also championed.
