Unlike the song-cycle, the trio is unremittingly sunny and optimistic and has become one of Schubert’s most popular works.Continuing the Festival’s celebration of Shostakovich’s music, his lovely Five pieces for Two Violins & Piano (arranged by his student Atovmian) have a touchingly Viennese flavour.He composed them during the time of his first job, playing the piano for silent movies. Tom Aldren joins the Primrose again for the Brahms Piano Quintet Op.34 (1893).
