Programme Note

This year’s Festival celebrates three anniversaries:
the 250th of Jane Austen, 150th of Maurice Ravel and the 50th anniversary of the death of Dmitri Shostakovich. Shostakovich was one of the most remarkable and  popular composers of the 20th century.
Written in 1943, his second piano trio was a
reflection on the horrors of World War II and is a supremely moving work, full of the drama and wealth of musical ideas we associate with his music. He formed a deep friendship with Benjamin Britten whose beautiful “Lachrymae” for viola complements the piano trio in this programme.

The Primrose Piano Quartet opens the Festival with Mozart's Piano Quartet in E flat major.

Ticket price includes a glass of wine or soft drink, served in the interval.
