Programme Note

Following their recent sell-out performance of Faure’s Requiem at St George’s, the stunningly high calibre musicians of Tenebrae and Aurora are reunited here for a performance of Arvo Pärt’s extraordinary setting of the St John Passion. Known widely as ‘Passio’ since its debut recording on ECM New Series in the 1980s, the Estonian master’s Passiontide work, setting chapters 18 and 19 from St John’s gospel, has an austere, solemn, monolithic beauty which has entranced many listeners since.

The passion and precision of Tenebrae’s elite singers will also shine in other beautifully solemn music from renaissance Spain, by Victoria and Lobo, and in Gregorio Allegri’s celebrated, soaring
