Programme Note

Celebrated British countertenor Iestyn Davies collaborates with Fretwork, “the finest viol consort on the planet” (London Evening Standard).  “The purity of his voice, with its rich palette of inflections, and his communication of the text, makes this ideal repertoire for him, and us” (The Guardian).

This programme  showcases the versatility of the instrument by  pairing some of the greatest music for viol consort by Orlando Gibbons (1583–1625) with music by contemporary composers - Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones, Arvo Pärt and Sting,  ending with Muhly’s extraordinary meditation on the death of Gibbons in My Days.
