Programme Note

This programme could easily have been performed in the intimate surroundings of Bach's family home or in the more sophisticated atmosphere of the Leipzig Coffee-House culture at Zimmermann's in fashionable Katharinenstrasse on Friday nights. Johann Georg Pisendel was a virtuoso violinist based in Dresden, a friend of Bach's who visited from the saxon capital's Court Orchestra, which he led. The sheer beauty, grace and eloquence of the music inspires and uplifts, running the gamut of human emotion for musicians and audiences alike.
