Programme Note

Vladimir Ashkenazy is one of the most revered musicians of our time, with a career spanning over fifty years of music-making both at the keyboard and with the conductor's baton. He returns to direct the Oxford Philharmonic in a stunning orchestral showcase, featuring the Rigoletto Fantasyperformed by the Orchestra's Mats Lidstrom, an international cello soloist and chamber musician who has gained a reputation for great insight and virtuosity. The second symphony of Brahms, written during an idyllic summer retreat in 1877, brims with wistful melodies and sensuous orchestral textures.
