Programme Note

Join Lewisham Choral Society in the beautiful ‘Arts and Crafts’ church of Holy Trinity for a musical feast from Eastern Europe. Hungarian composer Kodály wrote his glorious Missa Brevis as a gift for his wife while they were in hiding in a war-torn Budapest. His love of the human voice shines through in the work’s soaring soprano lines and exquisite vocal harmonies.  We also perform Kodály’s Pange Lingua and his pretty folk tune arrangement, Evening Song. Tonight’s works by Arvo Pärt, Alleluia-Tropus and Which was the son of reveal his distinctive soundscape, often termed "holy minimalism”, as bell-like voices blend with pure melodic lines to create a simple meditative stillness.  Górecki’s joyous Totus Tuus is a delight for singers and audiences alike.  The choir are accompanied by James Orford on the magnificent Holy Trinity organ and by pianist Nico de Villiers who also performs piano works by Brahms and Dohnányi.
