Programme Note

Christ Church again hosts virtuoso pianist Dmitrii. Following on from his complete cycle of Chopin Nocturnes last year, Dmitrii has chosen to open his recital with The Tree Suite, which includes some of the best-loved piano pieces by Sibelius – the trees really did “speak” to him. He will then perform the entire collection of the opus 25 Chopin Études, which are also so popular for all pianists, young or old!

After the interval, Dmitrii will play the momumental sonata by Liszt, which is an epic in the concert pianist’s repertoire. This work is in one through-composed gigantic Movement, which challenges the performer (and indeed the listener) physically and mentalty thoughout. Liszt dedicated this sonata to his friend Robert Schumann. There is, however, a rather sad footnote to this story, in that Schumann’s wife Clara, herself a composer and pianist, never played it, declaring it to be “just blind noise”!
