William Vann, multiple prize-winning accompanist and accomplished choral and operatic conductor, performs a recital of sublime organ music that pairs some evergreen works with some lesser known gems. The programme opens with Sigrid Karg-Elert’s Nun danket alle Gott, which William calls ‘a cleverly constructed mini-masterpiece’. It is followed by two contrasting pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach, Liebster Jesu, wir sind hier, and Prelude in G, showing how the organ can be sotto voce as well as loud and showy. The slow military march The Old Brigade has long been associated with the Royal Hospital,  it is played there regularly and you may be familiar with it from the Chelsea Pensioners’ march past the Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday. The programme finishes with two toccatas to show off two different aspects of the organ: the Boëllmann is dark and brooding while the Widor is light and celebratory.

The recital will be broadcast from the Wren Chapel at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, where William serves as organist and Director of Music.
