Programme Note

We are thrilled to welcome John Butt to conduct a program of sacred and secular music by Handel performed by the Cambridge University Chamber Choir and our own Collegium Musicum as well as members of both the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment Experience Ensemble. Handel takes on a new light performed on period-style instruments and with the impeccable stylings of Butt, the OAE, and leader Margaret Faultless. Much beloved classics like Handel’s Concerto Grosso op.6 No.1 are joined by recently discovered works such as his Gloria for a varied but always sparkling and gallant program.

John Butt is Gardiner Professor of Music at the University of Glasgow and musical director of Edinburgh’s Dunedin Consort as well as a Principal Artist with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. As he not only received both his undergraduate and doctoral degrees from the University of Cambridge but also returned to the university as a lecturer, we are excited to welcome him back.
