Programme Note

The concert includes the world premiere of 'Angels on the Beach at Night'. Written by Thomas Shorthouse for his fellow student at the Royal College of Music - Luca Imperiale (recorder soloist). The piece features 3 recorders alongside a full orchestra; it was inspired by a vivid dream during a camping trip in Australia.

Missy Mazzoli is an American composer and her  piece 'Orbiting Spheres' includes a full orchestra alongside tuned harmonics and a melodica. This combination produces some very atmospheric and unusual tones and textures.

The concert closes with Engima Variations; including the well-known 'Enigma' cello solo alongside the other variations depciting the characters of Elgar's acquaintances.
