Programme Note

A pinnacle of 17th century Italian music, Monteverdi's Vespers is a sumptuous feast of Baroque vocal and instrumental styles.

Monteverdi, the greatest composer of his time, wrote this work as 13 separate pieces to show off everything he knew to a prospective employer. His 'musical curriculum vitae' help secure him the job of choirmaster at St Mark's Basilica in Venice.

This glittering masterpiece is not performed as often as it deserves - so don't miss this opportunity to hear a truly authentic performance.

And why not bring strawberries and wine to enjoy during the longer-than-usual interval?
