Bach Magnificat & Roth A Time to Dance

Part of the Epsom Chamber Choir 2025-2026

Add to my Calendar 21-03-2026 19:30 21-03-2026 21:30 36 Bach Magnificat & Roth A Time to Dance EPSOM CHAMBER CHOIR AIMS TO PUT A SPRING IN YOUR STEP 18th century meets 21st Century in Epsom Chamber Choir’s spring concert where J S Bach's brilliant Magnificat is paired with Alec Roth’s equally exuberant ‘A Time to Dance’. Both works are scored for choir and Baroque chamber orchestra and share an invigorating drive and energy punctuated with moments of quiet reflection. The Magnificat, composed in 1733, is a staple in the choral repertoire, popular with singers and audiences alike and requiring a degree of choral virtuosity which Epsom Chamber Choir takes in its stride.  ‘A Time to Dance’ is more of an enigma. Published in 2012, it consists of numerous short and highly rhythmic movements for choir and soloists with echoes of Latin America, folk music, composers such as Bernstein and Copland and even hints of 20th century pop.  Roth’s chosen texts are equally wide-ranging from poets such as Ovid, Blake and Rosetti and beginning with a passage from Ecclesiastes. It ends with a joyful jig where the choir’s talents are fully extended (we say no more – you’ll need to be there). With St Martin’s Church providing the ideal acoustics for this programme, the audience can look forward to a memorable and energising concert. St Martin of Tours Church, Epsom DD/MM/YYYY
