Berlioz described Camille Saint-Saëns as ‘an absolutely shattering master pianist’. During his long and prodigiously creative life (he composed his first work aged three, and his last aged 85!), Saint-Saëns composed five piano concertos, and his second is a brilliant showcase for any pianist. By turns, tempestuous, flighty and lyrical, this concerto breaks convention by having each succeeding movement faster than the last in a structured accelerando, ending with an exhilarating conclusion.
