Programme Note

The North Staffs Symphony Orchestra is delighted that its principal clarinettist, Marie Bateman, will be the soloist in Weber's sparkling Clarinet Concerto No.1. The concert opens with Tchaikovsky's Waltz and Polonaise from Eugene Onegin and concludes with Symphony No.1 by the black American composer, Florence Price.  This exciting work, with its inspiration coming from Afro-American folk music as well as Dvorak's New World Symphony, was composed in 1932 and first performed in 1933 by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
