Programme Note

Beethoven String Quartet Op. 74 in Eb ‘The Harp’
String Quartet Op. 95 in F minor
String Quartet Op. 135 in F

As the renowned Fitzwilliam String Quartet prepare for their latest Beethoven recording, they return to Beverley with a programme featuring three of the composer’s most groundbreaking quartets: the so-called “Harp” perhaps the most accessible of his middle period quartets; Quartetto Serioso (Op.95), surely one of the most tersely confrontational works he ever wrote, and certainly the shortest of his 16 quartets; and finally the elliptical F major – the last one of all – in which he seems to be turning his back on the cosmic philosophical musings of its four mighty predecessors, instead striking out in new directions with something at once leaner, more genial and high spirited
