Programme Note

BCP’s cycle of Rachmaninov’s piano concertos continues tonight with British pianist, Gus Tredwell, playing the most famous of them all: No 2. It has everything: drama, mystery, romance, fireworks from the soloist and an endless supply of melody.

Before and after this great work, we hear two of Rachmaninov’s heroes and influences: to open, a sparkling overture depicting the start of Russia’s famous ‘white nights’ and all-night partying from Rimsky-Korsakov. BCP’s concert ends with Mussorgsky’s intriguing and glorious imagined wander round an art gallery, featuring an ox cart, catacombs, witches, the hut on chicken’s legs (!) and – finally and magnificently – the Great Gate of Kiev, with all the bells of the city pealing in triumph.
