Programme Note

Felicity Cliffe is the new conductor of the Hayes Symphony Orchestra. In her first concert she conducts Schumann's piano concerto in A minor, with Simon Ballard as the soloist. The work started as a one movement Fantasia but was not accepted by the publisher until it was reworked as a three movement concerto.

The concert begins with the Overture to Idomeneo. This was Mozart's first mature opera and it was first performed under his direction when he was 25 years old. Although Idomeneo is now part of the standard operatic repertoire this took some time to achieve. The first performance in the UK was in Glasgow in 1934.

The second half consists of Schuberts 6th Symphony which he wrote as a youthful 20 year-old. It is nicknamed the 'Little C major' to distinguish it from his later Ninth Symphony, in the same key, which is known as the 'Great'.
