This overture begins the one-act eponymous singspiel written in 1829. Samantha Carter, the leader of the HSO cello section, is the soloist in Saint-Saens cello concerto no.1 Beethoven's 8th symphony looks back to an earlier period with the inclusion of a Minuet instead of the Scherzo.
