Programme Note

Swaledale Fested is thrilled to have Syrian musician Maya Youssef a virtuoso player of the Qanun - a traditional 78-string zither found across the Arab world, Turkey, Armenia and Azerbaijan at this year;s Festival. As a result of winning an Arts Council England Exceptional Talent Award in 2012, she came to live in Britain and she now regularly appears on television and at venues and festivals worldwide. Accompanied by percussionist Elizabeth Nott and cellist Barney Morse-Brown, Maya combines her extraordinary musical gifts with warmth, humour and optimism.
