Programme Note

In November Britten Sinfonia present a special theatrical evening of music and poetry commemorating the centenary of the end of the First World War. At the heart of the performance, which has been devised by Dr Kate Kennedy, a specialist in the music and poetry of the period, is a new setting for baritone and chamber orchestra of Nico Muhly’s poignant The Last Letter, five songs using the texts of letters by First World War German and English soldiers and their loved ones. Poetry readings and music by composers and poets from both sides of the conflict, including Wilfred Owen, Ivor Gurney, Vera Brittain, Frederick Septimus Kelly and Rudi Stephan, will feature in the programme. Britten Sinfonia is directed by Thomas Gould with the baritone Jonathan McGovern and actors to be announced.
