Programme Note

We mark the 400th anniversary of the death (on 2nd March 1619) of Anne of Denmark, Queen consort of James I, with a programme of lute songs and solos by composers employed or patronized by her, her courtiers and other members of her family: James himself, the tragic Prince Henry, and his siblings Elizabeth and Charles. A number of the songs have texts by people whose portraits are also in the gallery, such as Shakespeare, Jonson, Donne and Henry Lee.
