Programme Note

The finale to our season brings Dvořák’s great Cello Concerto played by a brilliant young Bulgarian, Michael Petrov. We’ve also Tchaikovsky’s intensely emotional Pathétique Symphony. The composer said he had put more of himself into it than anything he had previously written. To begin we’ve the ultimate musical witches’ brew from Mussorgsky. His A Night on the Bare Mountain, memorably depicted in Disney’s Fantasia, has recently found renewed fame as one of the “Ten Pieces” recommended by the BBC for Primary schools.
