Particularly noted as outstanding exponents of Schubert and English Song, today’s programme is typically wide-ranging and includes Schubert’s first song cycle, the ambitious Einsamkeit. Jonathan Dove’s Under Alter’d Skies, which was commissioned by Wigmore Hall, receives its Leeds Lieder premiere, while Barber’s witty, stark and virtuosic cycle, his settings of translations of medieval Gaelic or Latin poems attributed to Irish saints and holy persons rounds off the recital.
