Following their spectacular 2014 performances of Verdi’s Requiem, Lewisham Choral Society and The Derbyshire Singers join forces once again in the first of two performances of Mendelssohn’s magnificent Elijah. Building on the legacy of Bach and Handel oratorios and using a rather sparse Biblical source, Mendelssohn added a large helping of early Romantic drama and colour: a musical depiction of rains falling on the parched earth, a fierce contest between Jehovah and Baal, a sacrifice consumed by fire and the prophet’s ascension to Heaven in a blazing chariot. Fiery and dramatic, yet richly lyrical – a feast indeed! This performance will be held in the beautiful town of Matlock, nestled in the Derbyshire Dales and the gateway to the Peak District.
