Gorton Philharmonic present our Spring concert, where we will be playing the rarely performed Mendelssohn Ritorna età dell'oro: with soprano Alexandra Lowe, and solo violin John Resek. This piece was originally written for Maria Malibran who has a tragic connection with Manchester. In July 1836 she fell from a horse, and rather than seek medical advice continued performing. In September the same year she performed in a festival in Manchester, collapsed after an encore and insisted on playing in the church the next morning where she died.
