Programme Note

Book early for this feast of English polyphonic music, all by composers enjoying major anniversaries in 2023.

William Byrd (1539-1623), a firm favourite of Elizabeth I, will be heard at his most brilliant in Laudibus in Sanctis, and his most popular in his Lullaby.

Thomas Weelkes (1576-1623), the disinhibited Organist of Chichester Cathedral, brings not only earthiness to his sacred music, but a sense of redemption and transcendence. William Cornysh (1465-1523) is a mysterious figure. Some of his music seems much older than his dates, and there's every possibility it is by his father, also called William Cornysh.
