The work was first performed at St Mark's Church in Milan on 22 May 1874 to a rapturous reception. It has been described as 'an opera in ecclesiastical robes' and was intended for the concert hall rather than the church. The Royal Tunbridge Wells Choral Society perform this powerful work for the first concert of their 117th season.
