Programme Note

Tonight we have an eclectic mix of musical morsels which combine together to make a wonderfully appetising whole.

Rossini had an amazing gift for writing catchy memorable tunes and his Overture to the Barber of Seville is stuffed full of them.  Next is Elgar's hymn of praise to his cairn terrier Mina.  Then comes Caplet 's Suite Persane inspired by  the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1889.  Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence follows, which seems to have been inspired by Italy's sunny climes.  We close the first half with Rachmaninov’s Scherzo in D minor.

After the interval another will known piece, Handel’s Suite #2 in D from the Water Music.  Then comes Svendsen’s Romance where our soloist tonight is our leader Ralph Dawson.  We’ve chosen Mozart’s 31st Symphony — “Paris” for our grand finale — notable for having an unusually large instrumentation for its time and the first symphony where he used clarinets.
